As gardeners across Cowlitz County begin planning for spring, the Longview Public Library is preparing to reopen its Seed Library for the 2026 growing season. According to reporting by Classic Hits 100.7 KLOG, the program will resume next Monday and will again offer free seed packets to local library cardholders.

Library patrons may select up to 15 different varieties each season from a collection that includes vegetables, flowers, and Pacific Northwest native plants. The library is launching this year’s program with roughly 800 packets, with additional varieties expected to be added as the season progresses. The library has maintained some form of a seed-sharing program in past years, positioning it as a recurring community resource for home gardeners.

In addition to distributing seeds, the Longview Public Library also provides gardening books, reference materials, and periodic educational presentations related to home growing. KLOG’s reporting notes that participants can also take part in the Seed Library Challenge by logging their gardening activities through Beanstack, a reading and activity-tracking platform often used by libraries.

The Seed Library is open to all Longview Public Library cardholders at no cost, making it one of the region’s more accessible seasonal programs for residents looking to start or expand home gardens.

Why this matters

Community seed libraries have grown in popularity across Washington and the country as local governments and residents look for low-barrier ways to support food resilience, education, and community well‑being. For many Longview households—particularly renters or residents with limited outdoor space—even a small packet of seeds can make home gardening more approachable.

The return of the program also highlights a continuing trend toward local institutions providing practical, hands‑on resources alongside traditional library services. In a region where many residents rely on gardening to supplement household food budgets or connect with local ecology, programs like this can have a meaningful seasonal impact.
