A Portland man has died after falling roughly 300 feet while climbing Mount Hood on Sunday morning, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities identified the climber as 32-year-old Matthew Kenney. Search and rescue personnel were dispatched to the popular mountain after witnesses reported the fall near the Old Chute route at around 8 a.m.

Rescuers from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue, Portland Mountain Rescue, and other volunteer teams responded immediately. A helicopter from the Oregon Army National Guard was called in to assist with the recovery. Despite the efforts of the teams, Kenney was pronounced dead at the scene. Weather and terrain conditions made the operation difficult, and rescuers spent hours carefully navigating the icy slope to complete their mission.
