Officials have determined that an alleged threat targeting Mark Morris High School in Longview was unsubstantiated. According to Longview Police Captain Tim Watson, law enforcement and district officials launched an overnight probe after a parent reported that a Snapchat conversation suggested a student intended to bring a weapon to school the following day.

The investigation revealed that the purported threat circulated within a group chat involving dozens of students. One participant relayed that they had heard another student might bring a specific weapon to campus. Detectives interviewed those involved, determined the threat lacked credibility, and confirmed the student at the center of the rumor is currently in jail on an unrelated charge. Officers also verified that the other students involved in the conversation did not have access to weapons.

Longview Police emphasized their continued commitment to evaluating all potential threats seriously and encouraged anyone who observes suspicious or alarming behavior to report it to authorities promptly.

Why this matters: Even seemingly minor social media posts can spark fear and panic within school communities. This case underscores the need for timely investigation and communication. While the rumor turned out to be false, the swift response helped prevent potential escalation and reassured stakeholders—students, parents, and staff—that their safety remained a priority.

Columbia Countercurrent reached out to Longview Police and the district for comment. In public statements, Captain Watson highlighted the value of community reporting in ensuring school safety.
