A free giveaway event in Vancouver distributed 560 boxes of diapers and other essential supplies to local families during the first weekend of August, according to reporting by The Reflector. The event, held at the Hazel Dell Fred Meyer at 7700 NE Highway 99, was part of a "Bundles of Love" campaign organized by the nonprofit Akin.

The distribution addresses significant economic pressures on households in Clark County, where diapers remain a primary request for assistance. The high demand resulted in all supplies being claimed by noon on both Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2. The initiative follows recent data highlighting the vulnerability of local youth; as previously reported on July 31, 2026, children represented nearly 30 percent of Clark County residents experiencing homelessness last year.

Families attending the event received reusable tote bags containing:

  • At least 80 diapers
  • Baby wipes
  • Baby food
  • Information on year-round support services

According to Akin Family Resource Manager Connie Cabler, diapers are the most requested item at the organization’s centers but are difficult to keep in stock due to their cost. The giveaway was intended to provide immediate relief while connecting caregivers to Akin’s Family Resource Centers in Vancouver and Washougal. These centers offer ongoing services including food assistance, early learning programs, behavioral health resources, and family navigation.

Cabler stated that the organization aims to provide services with few barriers, noting that there are no income requirements or residency restrictions for those seeking support. "There’s no real qualification other than they have a need and they come in the door," Cabler told The Reflector.

Akin is currently preparing to expand its local infrastructure. The organization maintains a Family Resource Center at 4421 NE St. Johns Road in Vancouver, where a new building is expected to be completed later this year. The nonprofit intends to use the expanded space to tailor future programming to specific community needs identified by local residents.

For more information on available services or to provide support, the organization directs residents to akinfamily.org.
