A 42-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in prison for a violent assault and robbery committed in Vancouver shortly after he escaped from a federal correctional facility in Oregon.
Andrew Cain Kristovich was convicted in June of second-degree rape, second-degree robbery, and car theft. The charges stem from an incident on April 25, 2022, the same day Kristovich escaped from the Sheridan Federal Correctional Institution. According to reporting by KOIN, Kristovich was serving a five-year federal sentence for conspiring to distribute fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills and unlawfully using a controlled substance in possession of a firearm at the time of his escape.
Court records indicate Kristovich fled the prison by hiding in bushes and crawling through a fence, where he was met by an ex-girlfriend. The woman told investigators she picked him up because he threatened to have her assaulted in front of her children if she did not comply. She had attempted to contact the prison to report his harassment, but no one answered her call.
After driving to her condominium in Vancouver, Kristovich assaulted the woman while her two children, ages 7 and 8, were in the home. The victim reported that Kristovich strangled her until she nearly lost consciousness and only stopped when a neighbor began banging on a shared wall. Kristovich then stole the woman’s car and phone.
The stolen car was found abandoned on April 27, 2022, in the parking lot of a Burlington Coat Factory in Edmonds, Washington. Nearly three weeks later, on May 14, 2022, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Kristovich in Carson City, Nevada.
In addition to the 20-year sentence for the Vancouver crimes, Kristovich pleaded guilty in federal court to escape from custody. In 2025, U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon sentenced him to two additional years in federal prison for the escape, to be served at the same Sheridan facility from which he fled.
