The City of Longview is initiating a series of pedestrian safety improvements at seven locations near Lake Sacajawea and 7th Avenue parks. According to official project documentation from the City of Longview, the work focuses on high-traffic areas where school and park activities generate significant pedestrian volumes. The project prioritizes the six-legged intersection of Nichols Boulevard at Harding, Garfield, and Hemlock streets, which sits adjacent to R.A. Long High School and Lake Sacajawea.

City records identify the Nichols, Harding, Garfield, and Hemlock intersection as having one of the highest pedestrian crossing volumes in the city. The project aims to address safety concerns raised by both drivers and pedestrians at this location. Five of the seven project sites will receive minor modifications, including the installation of crosswalk enhancements, ADA-compliant ramps, pedestrian refuges, and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) treatments. These minor changes are slated for locations identified in city plans as 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7.

Two specific sites, designated as locations 2 and 4, will undergo more significant modifications. The intersection of Louisiana Street and Nichols Boulevard is one of the areas scheduled for major access changes intended to increase safety. These locations will receive the same crosswalk and ramp upgrades as the other sites, supplemented by structural changes to how traffic accesses the intersections.

The city has not yet released specific budget figures or a definitive construction timeline for these improvements. Official documentation notes that the project is a priority due to the urgent safety issues identified at the complex six-legged intersection near the high school.
