Drivers heading north or south on Interstate 5 early Sunday morning should be prepared for brief delays near Toledo as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) conducts inspections on the Cowlitz River bridges.

According to WSDOT’s notice reported by KLOG, crews will use rolling slowdowns in both directions to create safe gaps for inspection work on the bridge decks west of Toledo.

For motorists traveling southbound, rolling slowdowns are planned between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m. starting near State Route 508 at milepost 71 and continuing toward Vader. Northbound drivers should expect similar conditions between 5 and 6 a.m., from Exit 49 at Castle Rock to near Vader.

The traffic disruptions are a precautionary measure allowing crews to perform bridge deck safety inspections without requiring full closures. Drivers traveling between Cowlitz and Lewis counties during the early morning hours are encouraged to allow extra time and to follow posted signs and directions from law enforcement vehicles escorting the slowdowns.

This work is part of WSDOT’s routine infrastructure monitoring program ensuring the structural health of the region’s key highway bridges. Weather and on-site conditions may affect exact timing.
