The City of Washougal has opened applications for two engagement pathways: the Spring 2026 Citizen Academy and vacancies on its Planning Commission.
Citizen Academy — Spring 2026
The Citizen Academy is a free, six‑week evening program designed to deepen community understanding of city operations and encourage civic participation. This year’s cohort will convene from April 16 through May 21, 2026, with sessions running from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. each Thursday at the Washougal Community Center, located at 1681 C Street. Participants are expected to attend at least five of the six sessions, although full attendance is strongly encouraged. The program is open to Washougal residents, business owners, and other community members. The city plans to accept up to 36 participants for this spring session. Applications must be submitted by March 26, 2026, and applicants will be notified of selection by March 27. For more information and to apply, visit the City of Washougal’s Citizen Academy page.
Planning Commission Vacancies
Washougal is also seeking applicants to fill two open positions on its Planning Commission, the advisory body that reviews land‑use policy and comprehensive plan amendments for the City Council. Members meet in the evening on the second and fourth Tuesdays as needed. Those residing within city limits or within the Urban Growth Boundary are eligible to apply. Applicants must submit a letter of interest along with a resume or narrative outlining their background, why they wish to serve, and how they could benefit the city. The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on February 20, 2026. Online applications are forwarded to Community Development Director Mitch Kneipp. Paper applications may also be submitted during business hours at Washougal City Hall, 1701 C Street.
Both opportunities come directly from the City of Washougal’s official news updates. Residents seeking to engage more deeply in local governance and community development have two clear and timely paths to step forward—whether through learning the inner workings of city government or shaping long‑term planning decisions.
Why this matters
These openings represent meaningful opportunities for Washougal residents to engage with municipal processes. The Citizen Academy cultivates informed participation, while Planning Commission service offers a more sustained role in shaping land‑use policy. Both strengthen accountability, transparency, and public involvement—core values central to local democracy.
